Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was developed by the Gracie family and is sometimes referred to a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Head instructor Wil Horneff is black belt under Ralph Gracie and is a Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Champion. If you are looking to learn the art of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in bergen county Training Grounds has an organized step by step curriculum to help you reach your goals.
The Training Grounds kids martial arts program has had a profound impact on Ellie in her everyday life. When Ellie first started martial arts classes at Training Grounds she'd shy away from matches and inevitably end up in tears all most every class. A fall to the ground or another child pushing her would bring on the tears. Now, hardly ever a tear. At sports she no longer shies away from the ball, she knows that although it may hurt to get hit, she's tough and will be ok. That if she falls and gets a scrape or a bruise, she's tough and will be ok. Ellie has become extremely confident, not combative but self-assertive, something more people should try to instill in girls/young women. That’s something they work on in their kids martial arts classes. The pride she feels when she does a Jiu-Jitsu match whether she wins or losses is amazing to see. Her self confidence shines through, in the way she holds herself and softness of her face. She looks up to Professor Wil and all the coaches, a single complement is worth more then any skill strip she could earn. I don't think I could have made a better choice of sports for my child than kids martial arts. There is no other place or coaches that could gift her those skills, other than Training Grounds Jiu-Jitsu & MMA. Westwood, NJ
Wil Horneff is not only an excellent, accomplished martial arts competitor and instructor, but much more importantly a good man who consistently displays integrity and character. He’s a true martial artist with a high skill set for both teaching and training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I am proud to have him as a friend and wholeheartedly recommend both him and Training Grounds Jiu-Jitsu & MMA to new and experienced students of the martial arts.

The main reason why I wanted to join a mixed martial arts school is because I wanted to lose weight. I was going to a gym and running on a treadmill and lifting weights and found it really boring and hard to stick to. I could always do less than necessary and not really have a good enough workout. There was no one really pushing me or motivating me. I experienced the opposite at Training Grounds Jiu-Jitsu & MMA. I lost over 100lbs so far here in addition to gaining flexibility and and strength. I used to have back problems and it has helped my back tremendously. I went to a lot of schools in nj that teach mma to interview which one would be best for me and this was by far the #1 choice. This is my second home; This is family here. We are all friends and family members. From the second you walk in the door you feel comfortable. You feel like a part of the gym and that is what is really special about this place. It's like no other mma gym. You get treated like family. You get treated with respect from day one. The instruction is very one on one. It's very personal. Other martial arts gyms you have to figure it out on your own. Here you are treated like family. I loved it so much I even became a permanent family member by becoming an instructor. It's been over 8 years for me now.
My two boys train twice a week and they love it. There are other places in that teach kids martial arts in Bergen County that are much closer to home. But they just don’t compare to the experience that is offered by Professor Wil and the kids program here. He is able to reach kids and communicate on a level they understand. He is encouraging but also enforces discipline and respect. The boys and I absolutely love his kids martial arts program.
My name Stephen Brown. I'm 33 years old and a law enforcement officer here in Bergen County. The martial arts have always been interesting to me. I chose Brazilian jiu jitsu due to the fact that most street level combat is ground combat. I came here because I wanted to increase my defensive skill set which would keep me safe on the street and knew that bjj would be a good fit. The second was that my doctor found that I had high blood pressure and told me I needed to do 150 minutes a week of cardio. After a few months of training BJJ and MMA 2x per week my pressure is down to what it was when I was 21 years old with no medication. Of all the academies that teach brazilian jiu jitsu in nj I chose Training Grounds because no other bjj gym that I have been to has a group of guys that are this tight knit. A lot of guys here are personal friends outside gym having met through training. Everybody is willing to work with you and help out. Professor Wil's curriculum is almost individual based. He matches you up with the people you should be matched up with to for training and then eventually when you are more advanced you get to do the sparring. He puts you in situations where you are going to get the most out of your bjj training. I love training here and I look forward to getting my black belt in BJJ someday.
My four children train with Professor Wil. I wanted them to develop courage, self esteem, and discipline and that’s exactly what they got out of the program. His system really works and it's the best gift you can give your child. Their kids martial arts program is such a huge part of their lives and the benefits aren’t just limited to self defense. It’s much more far reaching into their school work and social interactions. So happy we did this for them.
I joined Training Grounds Jiu-Jitsu & MMA to get in the best shape of my life and to gain a competitive edge in the grappling arena. I want to be a brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion and this martial arts school has what it takes to get me there. I am a 4th degree black belt in taekwondo and karate and I can tell you that the martial arts instruction I receive here is phenomenal. I've trained at other martial arts schools in bergen county that taught self defense before joining the Training Grounds family and it's a big contrast. Professor Wil is extremely dedicated to what he does and is a true martial artist. The BJJ and MMA curriculum is well structured and Wil breaks down each technique to its core in order for you to learn it quicker. Most martial arts schools don't even have a curriculum. From joining the program I have become more confident in my overall fighting ability and I have unlimited cardio now. My progress at one point was plateauing but since being here at Training Grounds Jiu-Jitsu & MMA it's at another level.

My name is Tim Mcdermott. I'm 24 and I'm a teacher in Leonia at an elementary school. I've wanted to do learn MMA for several reasons. I've always been a big sports guy and I wanted to be part of a team. I knew that learning a mixed martial art was going to be challenging so I wanted a place that I felt was able to teach it well. Additionally, I wanted to find a place where I could push myself and set goals. At Training Grounds Jiu-Jitsu & MMA I was able to find both of those things. Not only did the coaches help me reach my mixed martial arts goals, but i also found it was a really good team where they invest in you. I feel myself growing not just as a mma practitioner but also as a person. I love the people that I get to be around here at the academy.
My 7 year old son started here a year ago in the kids martial arts program and it's all he talks about. I don't think the coaches actually know the impact that they make on these kids on a daily basis. It’s about so much more than the martial arts techniques. They focus on instilling character through their life skill program and really take the time to coach your child. I call them up and let them know when Chase has done something great at school or when he needs a mat chat after class. Since Chase has been in the kids brazilian jiu-jitsu program he’s developed tremendous self confidence and determination. It makes him better at school and other sports. It's really the best gift I could ever have given him. What a difference it's making in his life. Thanks to all the coaches who have partnered with me in mentoring my son!
My name is Mike Gray. I met Wil in 2009 when I switched martial arts schools. I was immediately taken by Wil's passion for not just the physicality but for the philosophy of Jiu Jitsu. He teaches a way of Jiu Jitsu that can help you not only on the mat, but also in life. When I first started training mma and Jiu Jitsu with Wil, I had been training at other BJJ academies in nj. Once of the things that impressed me about him is that I'm coming into Jiu Jitsu as 40 year old with 4 children. I'm not a 20 year old guy who just came out of high school wrestling. Very quickly Wil was able to see me training and tell me how to modify things for my style and body type. He knew exactly what would and wouldn't work for me. He didn't expect me to do everything that an athletic 20 year can do as if there was one cookie cutter lesson that you just hope works for everyone. Wil really took the time to sit down and get on the mat with me and figure out what works for me. The other thing I love about the place are the relationships that you build though a mutual experience of overcoming obstacles and challenges in your martial arts training. Everyone here is friends with each other and supports each other. There are no "crushers" who want to take you out. It's the most supportive environment and I am glad I'm a part of it.
I found out about Training Grounds through their online reviews which were impressive. Now fast forward a year and a half and I’m really glad I made the right choice by enrolling my son. It's been wonderful to watch my son's confidence increase and to see him feel more comfortable socially. The teachers are more than coaches, they are mentors. I definitely recommend anyone looking to enroll their child in kids martial arts to try out Training Grounds!
